Once upon a time there was an exciting world called burlesque.

It existed in theaters across America and was the domain of baggy pants comics making crowds roar with laughter at their bawdy humor.

But burlesque theaters were also temples for the veneration of female beauty, and the reigning

goddesses were dancers who raptured audiences by simply taking off their clothes to music.

Almost all of the performances of these queens of teas have been lost to the ages,

but a few still exist, shot on film for limited theatrical release or stag party viewing.

These have preserved for all time some of the great performances of the lost art of the strip teas.

Not all strippers were busty bombshells.

Burlesque queens came in all shapes and sizes, from buxom to slender, petite to statuesque.

For most exotic dancers, stripping was simply a way to make a living,

and they regarded their profession with jaded cynicism.

But a few infused their acts with imagination and glamour,

partly out of the ingrained spirit to take professional pride in their work,

whatever it might be.

More importantly, a stripper made more money as a headliner

rather than just one of the girls of the chorus.
